TELC B2 Passing Score Explained: Points, Sections & Strategy
Exactly how many points do you need to pass TELC B2? This guide breaks down the full scoring system — section by section — so you know where to focus your preparation.
If you are preparing for TELC B2, one of the most important things to understand is exactly how the scoring works. Not just the overall threshold — but which sections carry the most points, how the written and oral parts are evaluated separately, and which sections give you the best return on your preparation time. This guide gives you every number you need.

The Quick Answer: What Score Do You Need?
- •Overall passing threshold: 60% of total points
- •Written section (Schriftliche Prüfung): must pass separately — 60% of written points
- •Oral section (Mündliche Prüfung): must pass separately — 60% of oral points
- •Total points available: 300 (225 written + 75 oral)
- •Minimum to pass written: 135 out of 225 points
- •Minimum to pass oral: 45 out of 75 points
- •Minimum overall: 180 out of 300 points
Critical: you must pass both sections independently
This is the most misunderstood aspect of TELC B2 scoring. You can score 90% on Lesen and Hören but if you score below 60% on the written section as a whole, you fail. And a perfect written score cannot rescue a failed oral section. Both must independently reach 60%.
Full Scoring Breakdown by Section

- •Leseverstehen (Reading Comprehension): 105 points — the single largest written section. Covers three reading tasks (Teil 1, 2, and 3). Teil 1: 5 items × 5 points = 25 pts. Teil 2: 10 items × 5 points = 50 pts. Teil 3: 10 items × 3 points = 30 pts.
- •Sprachbausteine (Language Elements): 30 points — two gap-fill tasks. Teil 1: 10 items × 1.5 points = 15 pts. Teil 2: 10 items × 1.5 points = 15 pts.
- •Hörverstehen (Listening Comprehension): 45 points — three listening tasks. Teil 1: 10 items × 1.5 pts = 15 pts. Teil 2: 5 items × 3 pts = 15 pts. Teil 3: 5 items × 3 pts = 15 pts.
- •Schreiben (Writing): 45 points — one formal letter or email. Scored holistically across five criteria: Inhalt (content/task completion), Textaufbau (structure and coherence), Ausdruck (vocabulary and expression), Korrektheit (grammatical and spelling accuracy), Handlungsaspekte (addressing all required points).
- •Sprechen (Speaking — oral exam): 75 points — three spoken tasks with a partner. Scored on fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, and interaction. See our full structure guide for detail on each Sprechen task.
Written vs. Oral: Understanding the Split
The 225-point written section contains four components: Leseverstehen (105 pts), Sprachbausteine (30 pts), Hörverstehen (45 pts), and Schreiben (45 pts). To pass the written section you need 135 points — 60% of 225.
Notice something: Leseverstehen alone is worth 105 points out of 225. If you score 80% on Leseverstehen, that gives you 84 points — which means you only need 51 more points from the remaining 120 to pass the written section. Lesen is your highest-leverage written section. Schreiben is only 45 points but is often the most difficult to score well on — and is the section most people underestimate.
What Happens if You Barely Fail One Section?
TELC B2 allows partial retakes. If you pass the written section but fail the oral (or vice versa), you only need to retake the section you failed — not the full exam. Partial retake fees are typically €150–€220 (versus €190–€250 for a full retake). You retain your passing section result for a limited period — check with your specific test center for the exact validity window, as this varies.
What Grade Do You Receive?
TELC B2 results are issued as bestanden (passed) or nicht bestanden (failed). Within the passed range, there are grade descriptors based on your percentage:
- •Sehr gut (Very Good): approximately 90%+ (270+ points)
- •Gut (Good): approximately 80–89% (240–269 points)
- •Befriedigend (Satisfactory): approximately 70–79% (210–239 points)
- •Ausreichend (Sufficient / Pass): 60–69% (180–209 points)
For most professional and academic purposes, any passed result (bestanden) is sufficient. The grade label rarely matters — the certificate states your level as B2 regardless of whether you scored 61% or 91%.
Which Sections Give the Best Return on Preparation Time?
- •Sprachbausteine (Language Elements — 30 pts): The highest points-per-effort ratio in the exam. Gap-fill tasks are highly trainable — the vocabulary and grammar patterns are predictable. Learners who drill Sprachbausteine specifically often improve their score by 20–25% on this section within 2–3 weeks.
- •Leseverstehen (Reading — 105 pts): The highest absolute point value. Improving your reading scan strategy and vocabulary range has a bigger absolute impact than improving any other section.
- •Sprechen Teil 3 (Speaking — planning task): The most learnable speaking task. It follows a fixed format (discuss and agree on a plan) and can be practised with a clear structure. Candidates who practise this format specifically score noticeably higher.
- •Schreiben (Writing — 45 pts): Time-consuming to improve but essential — failing the written section because of a weak Schreiben score is very common. Get feedback on at least 4–5 letters before your exam.
